How Long Does Flooring Installation Take?
Planning a flooring project means planning your life around it. You need to know how many days your home will be disrupted, when you can move furniture back in, and whether you'll need to make arrangements for pets, kids, or working from home. Here's a realistic look at timelines for every type of flooring we install across Greater Austin.
Quick Timeline Summary
| Flooring Type | Typical Timeline | Walk-On Ready |
|---|---|---|
| Hardwood (pre-finished) | 3–5 days | Immediately |
| Hardwood (site-finished) | 5–7 days | 24–48 hours after final coat |
| Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) | 1–3 days | Immediately |
| Tile | 3–7 days | 24–48 hours after grouting |
| Hardwood Refinishing | 3–5 days | 24–72 hours after final coat |
These timelines assume a typical Austin home with 800 to 1,500 square feet of flooring. Larger projects take longer, and smaller jobs (a single room or bathroom) may be completed in a day.
Hardwood Floor Installation: 3–5 Days
Hardwood flooring installation is one of the more involved flooring projects, but the results are worth the wait. Here's how the timeline breaks down for a typical 1,000 to 1,200 square foot project:
Pre-Finished Hardwood (3–5 Days)
- Day 1: Old flooring removal (if needed), subfloor inspection and preparation. On Austin slab foundations, we check for moisture levels and flatness. Any leveling compound or moisture barrier gets applied.
- Days 2–3: Plank installation. Pre-finished hardwood goes down faster because there's no sanding or finishing on site. A two-person crew can typically install 300 to 500 square feet per day.
- Day 4–5: Transitions, baseboards, trim, and final cleanup. The floor is walk-on ready as soon as installation is complete.
Site-Finished Hardwood (5–7 Days)
Site-finished hardwood adds time because the floor is sanded and finished after installation:
- Days 1–3: Removal, prep, and plank installation (same as pre-finished).
- Day 4: Sanding the installed floor through multiple grits to create a perfectly smooth surface.
- Day 5: Stain application (if you want a custom color). The stain needs to dry before topcoats can be applied.
- Days 6–7: Two to three coats of polyurethane, with drying time between each coat. Water-based poly dries faster (2 to 4 hours between coats) than oil-based (8 to 12 hours).
After the final coat, you'll need to wait 24 to 48 hours before walking on the floor in socks, and 72 hours before placing furniture. Full cure takes about two weeks, during which you should avoid area rugs and heavy furniture rearranging.
Don't Forget Acclimation
Before any hardwood installation begins, the wood needs to acclimate to your home's temperature and humidity. This typically takes 3 to 5 days. We deliver the material to your home ahead of the installation date so the wood adjusts. In Austin's variable climate, skipping this step is a recipe for gaps and buckling later.
LVP Installation: 1–3 Days
Luxury vinyl plank is the fastest flooring to install, which is one of its biggest advantages for Austin homeowners who need to minimize disruption.
- Day 1: Old flooring removal and subfloor prep. LVP is more forgiving of minor subfloor imperfections than hardwood, but significant unevenness still needs to be addressed.
- Days 1–2: Installation. Click-lock LVP goes down quickly, and a skilled crew can cover 500 to 800 square feet per day. For a typical 1,000-square-foot project, installation itself often takes just one to two days.
- Day 2–3: Transitions, trim, and cleanup. The floor is immediately walk-on ready, and you can move furniture back in the same day.
LVP doesn't require acclimation in most cases (check the manufacturer's instructions), which means there's no waiting period before installation begins. For a single room or a small area, we can often complete the entire project in a single day.
Why LVP Is Great for Occupied Homes
Because there's no dust from sanding, no chemical fumes from staining, and no drying time, LVP installation is the least disruptive option. We've installed LVP in homes where families continued living normally throughout the project, just working room by room. It's also the top choice for rental property turnovers in Austin where time between tenants is limited.
Tile Installation: 3–7 Days
Tile is the most time-intensive flooring to install because of the multi-step process involving mortar, setting, grouting, and curing.
- Day 1: Demolition of old flooring and subfloor preparation. Tile requires an extremely flat surface. On concrete slabs, this may involve grinding down high spots or applying self-leveling compound. On wood subfloors, cement backer board needs to be installed.
- Days 2–4: Tile setting. Each tile is placed individually in thin-set mortar, and spacing is maintained with spacers. A bathroom (50 to 80 square feet) might take a single day, while a kitchen and main living area (400+ square feet) takes two to three days. Large-format tiles (24x48) take longer due to the precision required.
- Day 4–5: Grouting. Once the mortar has set (24 hours), grout is applied to all joints. This adds another full day for most projects.
- Days 5–7: Grout curing, sealing (if needed), transitions, and trim. You'll need to stay off the tile for 24 to 48 hours after grouting to allow proper curing.
Tile Pattern Affects Timeline
The layout pattern you choose directly impacts how long tile installation takes:
- Straight lay: The fastest pattern. Tiles are laid in a grid, which requires the fewest cuts.
- Brick or offset pattern: Slightly more cuts than straight lay, adding 10 to 15% more time.
- Herringbone or chevron: Significantly more cuts and precision work. Expect 30 to 50% more installation time compared to straight lay.
- Mosaic or custom patterns: These are the most labor-intensive and can double installation time.
Hardwood Refinishing: 3–5 Days
Refinishing existing hardwood is faster than a full installation because the wood is already in place, but the sanding and finishing process still requires time and patience.
- Day 1: Furniture removal (or we work room by room), thorough inspection of the existing floor, nail setting, and any board repairs.
- Day 2: Sanding through three grits (coarse, medium, fine) to remove the old finish and smooth the surface. This is the dustiest day, though modern dustless sanding systems capture 95% or more of the dust.
- Day 3: Stain application (if changing color). Popular stain choices in Austin right now include natural white oak, dark walnut, and warm honey tones. The stain needs 12 to 24 hours to dry.
- Days 4–5: Polyurethane topcoats. Two to three coats are applied with drying time between each. Water-based polyurethane dries in 2 to 4 hours per coat and has minimal odor. Oil-based poly takes 8 to 12 hours per coat and has a stronger smell.
After the final coat, allow 24 hours before walking in socks, 48 hours for light furniture, and two weeks for full cure. During refinishing, you'll need to vacate the area being worked on, though other parts of the house remain livable.
Factors That Affect Your Timeline
Several variables can extend or shorten your project:
Old Flooring Removal
If you have existing flooring that needs to come out, add half a day to a full day. Carpet is the fastest to remove. Multiple layers of old vinyl or tile glued to concrete take the longest and may require grinding.
Subfloor Issues
Uneven subfloors, moisture problems, or damaged subflooring can add one to two days. Austin homes built on expansive clay soils sometimes have slab movement that creates unevenness, and we won't install flooring over a problem subfloor.
Project Size
The timelines above are based on 800 to 1,500 square feet. A 3,000-square-foot whole-house project will take roughly twice as long. A single bedroom (150 square feet) of LVP might be done in half a day.
Stairs
Stairs are one of the most time-consuming elements of any flooring project. Each step requires precise cuts and finishing. A full staircase (12 to 15 steps) adds one to two days depending on the material.
Custom Details
Borders, inlays, medallions, and transitions between different flooring types all add time. We discuss these details during the estimate so there are no surprises.
How to Prepare for Flooring Installation
Preparing your home before the crew arrives saves time and money. Here's a checklist:
- Clear the rooms: Move all furniture, rugs, and personal items out of the work area. Most installers charge extra for furniture moving.
- Remove wall hangings: Vibrations from demolition and installation can knock items off walls. Take down anything fragile or valuable in adjacent rooms.
- Plan for pets: Dogs and cats need to be out of the work area for their safety and to prevent them from walking on drying finish. Board them or set up a safe zone in another part of the house.
- Plan for dust: Even with dustless sanding equipment, hardwood refinishing produces some dust. Cover or remove items in adjacent rooms and seal doorways with plastic sheeting if possible.
- Maintain HVAC: Keep your air conditioning running at normal levels during and after installation. Austin's humidity affects how flooring acclimmates and how finishes cure. We recommend keeping indoor humidity between 35 and 55 percent.
- Clear a path: The crew needs to carry materials through your home. Clear a wide path from the entry point to the work area.
- Discuss parking: Our work trucks and trailers need parking space. Let us know about any HOA restrictions or limited driveway access ahead of time.
What to Expect During Installation
Understanding the day-to-day process reduces stress and helps you plan around the project:
- Noise: Flooring installation involves nail guns, saws, and sanders. It's loud. Plan to be elsewhere during the loudest phases (demolition and sanding) if noise is a concern.
- Work hours: Our crews typically work from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Saturday. We respect your neighborhood and won't start power tools before 8:00 AM.
- Daily communication: We'll keep you updated on progress, any issues we encounter, and the expected completion date. If something comes up that affects the timeline, you'll know about it right away.
- Final walkthrough: When the project is complete, we do a walkthrough with you to inspect every detail. If anything needs attention, we address it before we pack up.
Schedule Your Flooring Project
The best time to schedule flooring installation in Austin is during spring (March through May) or fall (September through November) when humidity is moderate and temperatures make acclimation straightforward. Summer and winter projects work fine too, as long as your HVAC is running normally. Our schedule fills up quickly during peak renovation season, so we recommend booking two to four weeks ahead.
