Laminate Flooring Installation in Austin, TX
If you want the look of hardwood floors without the hardwood price tag, laminate flooring is a smart option worth considering. At ATX Floor Installer, we install laminate flooring throughout Greater Austin for homeowners who want an attractive, durable floor at a budget-friendly price. We are honest about what laminate does well and where it falls short, because our goal is to help you make the right choice for your home, not just sell you a floor.
Laminate flooring has come a long way from the shiny, obviously fake products of twenty years ago. Today's best laminate features realistic wood-grain textures, embossed surfaces, and wide-plank formats that look genuinely good. It is not hardwood and it is not LVP, but for the right application and the right budget, laminate is a perfectly valid flooring choice.
What Is Laminate Flooring?
Laminate flooring is a multi-layer product made from compressed fiberboard with a photographic image layer that replicates the look of wood, stone, or tile. The top layer is a clear, hard-wearing melamine resin that protects against scratches, fading, and wear. The bottom layer is a stabilizing backer that helps the plank resist moisture from below and maintain its shape.
Unlike hardwood flooring, laminate is not made from real wood (except the fiberboard core). Unlike luxury vinyl plank, laminate has a wood-fiber core rather than a plastic one. This distinction matters most when it comes to water resistance, which we will cover in detail below.
Understanding AC Ratings
Laminate flooring is rated on the AC (Abrasion Class) scale, which measures durability and wear resistance. Understanding AC ratings helps you choose the right product for each room:
- AC1 (Moderate Residential) — Suitable for low-traffic areas like bedrooms and closets. Not recommended for main living spaces.
- AC2 (General Residential) — Handles normal residential foot traffic. Good for living rooms and dining rooms in low-traffic households.
- AC3 (Heavy Residential / Moderate Commercial) — The most common rating for quality residential laminate. Handles heavy foot traffic, kids, and pets. This is the minimum we recommend for most Austin homes.
- AC4 (General Commercial) — Built for commercial use but also excellent for high-traffic residential areas. A strong choice for families with kids and large dogs.
- AC5 (Heavy Commercial) — The highest rating, designed for heavy commercial foot traffic. Overkill for residential use but available if you want maximum durability.
We recommend AC3 as the minimum for any laminate installation in an Austin home. If you have pets or kids, step up to AC4 for the extra wear resistance. The cost difference between AC3 and AC4 is typically less than a dollar per square foot, and the added durability is worth it.
Water-Resistant vs. Waterproof: An Honest Comparison
This is the most important thing to understand about laminate flooring: traditional laminate is not waterproof. The fiberboard core can swell and warp if exposed to standing water, which means a burst pipe, a forgotten pet bowl, or a leaky dishwasher can cause serious damage.
Newer water-resistant laminate products have treated cores and sealed edges that can handle brief moisture exposure, typically up to 24 to 72 hours depending on the product. This is a significant improvement and is fine for normal living conditions, including occasional spills that are wiped up within a few minutes.
However, if waterproofing is a priority, especially for kitchens, bathrooms, or laundry rooms, we generally recommend luxury vinyl plank instead. LVP is 100 percent waterproof at the core level and will not swell or warp even if submerged. We would rather steer you toward the right product than install laminate in a situation where it might fail.
Laminate vs. LVP vs. Hardwood
Austin homeowners frequently ask us to compare these three options. Here is a straightforward breakdown:
- Price: Laminate is the most affordable at $4 to $8 per square foot installed. LVP runs $5 to $10, and hardwood is $7 to $15 depending on the species.
- Water resistance: LVP is fully waterproof. Water-resistant laminate handles brief exposure. Hardwood is the most vulnerable to moisture damage.
- Appearance: Hardwood looks and feels the most authentic because it is real wood. Quality LVP and laminate are both very realistic, with LVP having a slight edge in texture realism.
- Durability: All three are durable in different ways. Laminate resists scratches better than hardwood. LVP resists dents and water better than laminate. Hardwood can be sanded and refinished multiple times, which laminate and LVP cannot.
- Comfort: Laminate and LVP with underlayment are similar in comfort. Both are softer than tile but firmer than carpet. Hardwood is harder underfoot.
- Resale value: Hardwood adds the most resale value. LVP is well-received by buyers. Laminate is generally viewed as a budget option, which can be a factor if you plan to sell your home in the near future.

When Laminate Makes Sense
We install laminate for Austin homeowners in situations where it genuinely makes sense:
- Budget-conscious whole-home updates. If you are replacing carpet or outdated flooring throughout a large area and need to keep costs down, laminate gives you the most coverage per dollar.
- Rental properties. Laminate is durable, affordable, and fast to install, making it practical for landlords and property managers across Round Rock, Pflugerville, and Georgetown.
- Bedrooms and bonus rooms. Low-moisture rooms where the floor does not face water exposure are ideal for laminate.
- Temporary updates. If you plan to upgrade later but need something attractive and functional now, laminate is a practical bridge solution.
- Kids' playrooms and media rooms. Laminate's scratch resistance and easy cleanup make it practical for spaces where kids play and spills happen on carpet-free floors.
When to Consider an Upgrade
We will always be straight with you. Here are situations where we typically recommend investing in LVP or hardwood instead of laminate:
- Kitchens and bathrooms. The moisture risk is too high for standard laminate. Water-resistant laminate can work in kitchens if you are diligent about spill cleanup, but LVP is a safer choice.
- Homes you plan to sell soon. If maximizing resale value is a priority, LVP or hardwood will give you a better return.
- Pet owners with large dogs. Heavy dogs with long nails can be tough on laminate. LVP's softer surface absorbs impacts better, and any scratches are less visible. Read more on our blog about the best flooring for dogs.
- Slab foundations with moisture issues. Some Austin homes on older slabs have elevated moisture levels. LVP handles this better than laminate, which can swell if moisture migrates up through the slab.
Our Laminate Installation Process
Laminate is one of the faster flooring products to install, which keeps labor costs down and minimizes disruption to your home:
- Consultation and measurement. We visit your home, measure the rooms, evaluate the subfloor, and discuss product options. You get a detailed written estimate at no cost.
- Subfloor preparation. We remove existing flooring, clean the subfloor, and check for levelness. Laminate is less forgiving of uneven subfloors than LVP, so we take extra care to ensure the surface is flat within manufacturer tolerances, typically 3/16 inch over 10 feet.
- Underlayment installation. We install quality underlayment that provides moisture protection, sound dampening, and a small amount of cushion. Some laminate products come with attached underlayment, and we advise on whether additional padding is needed.
- Laminate installation. We use a floating click-lock installation method. Planks lock together without glue or nails, and the entire floor floats over the subfloor and underlayment. We maintain proper expansion gaps around walls and fixed objects to allow for natural expansion and contraction.
- Trim and transitions. We install baseboards, quarter-round trim, and transition strips. We clean up the workspace and walk through the finished floor with you.
Most laminate installations for a typical Austin home are completed in one to two days.

- Underlayment (if needed separately): $0.50 to $1 per square foot
- Removal of existing flooring: $1 to $2 per square foot
For a 1,000-square-foot installation, most Austin homeowners spend between $4,000 and $8,000 total including materials, labor, and removal of old flooring. That is significantly less than LVP or hardwood for the same area. Get a free estimate for exact pricing on your project.
